for the five tests: 
= 83. Multiply both sides by 5: a + b + c + d + e = 415. Now, let e represent the test that was removed, and set up the average equation for the four remaining tests: 
= 86. Multiply both sides by 4: a + b + c + d = 344. Finally subtract the second equation from the first equation. On the left side, all variables with cancel out except for e. On the right side, 415 - 344 = 71. As e = 71, that is the score of the removed test.
