Question: 3

3. The graph shows the distance Enrico was from the beach over a period of time during his walk home.

During the walk, Enrico worried that he had left his keys at the beach. He paused to look through his beach bag, did not find the keys, and started to walk back to the beach. Before he arrived at the beach, he realized that the keys were in his pocket, so he turned back around and went home. What was the total extra distance that Enrico walked because of his mistake?

  • A. 0.2 kilometers
  • B. 0.3 kilometers
  • C. 0.4 kilometers
  • D. 0.5 kilometers

Correct Answer: C

Explanation:

C

The extra distance is represented by the part of the walk from when he turned back to the beach through the time he reversed to go back home up until he arrived back at the point at which he had turned around in the first place. Read the chart, and you will see that from time 0.4 to time 0.6, he was moving closer to the beach. That distance was from 0.2 km (from 0.4 to 0.2). Getting back to where he first turned around adds another 0.2 km, for a total of 0.4 km.
